The Beginning
My name is Brenda M. Rider; I'm a cancer survivor and poet. With the help of a few friends we founded A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. (AWWWF) in 2003 as a literary non-profit 501(c)3 foundation (see officers, board members, and staff below). Through my cancer treatment and continued survival, I have used my poetry and songwriting to help myself and others cope.

The most common response after someone has read one of my poems is "you sure have a way with words." Because of this, I knew what our foundation would be called. Soon after incorporating, we realized that there were many people in the area touched by cancer that also had 'a way with words'. We decided to gather material, spreading the message through word of mouth, flyers, and mailings requesting submissions.

Today, the A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. (AWWWF) continues to accept submissions from those who have been touched by cancer. Our goal is to publish one new book of these voices a year. We include poetry, stories, and art work to express the surprising hope, humor, and growth that can come from a struggle with loss and survival. The R.O.C.c.K. (Raising Our Commitment to cancer Kids) Children's Choir draws from these submissions for new songs to sing in concerts. The "Relay the Message" music CD single was our first recording in 2002, which blossomed into a full album under the "Relay the Message" project in May 2004.

These ribbons appear on each page of this web site. The blue ribbon is used to indicate support for lung cancer patients and survivors, while the pink symbolizes breast cancer. To the A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. (AWWWF), these ribbons represent ribbons of all colors that hold the promise that others care and support those who encounter whatever crisis a single ribbon symbolizes.

When we use any color of ribbon on this site, we do it to encompass all ribbons of promise. Brenda Rider incorporates this universal idea of support in one of her more well-known songs the, "Rainbow of Ribbons." The song was written during her successful struggle with breast cancer and first published in 2001. Ever since then, the American Cancer Society has sung, and continues to sing, this song at every Relay for Life held in the United States.

Check out our catalog on how you can get your own copy of the R.O.C.c.K. Children's Choir singing the "Rainbow of Ribbons" on music CDs, or contact the 501(c)(3) non-profit A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. (AWWWF) for more information.

Proceeds from all A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. (AWWWF) fund-raising activities go to programs that support cancer patients, survivors, their survival networks, and that help fund cancer awareness and research.
